New shots first
A friend's day opens at the first shot they posted since you last looked, in the feed and the viewer, with "2 new" on the card.
Since build 9
When a friend adds to their day, their card opens at the first shot they posted since you last looked, instead of starting over from the shots you already saw. Durpin remembers which of your friends' shots you've seen, and each day opens just after the newest one of them.
In the feed
- A card opens at the first new shot. If you saw Maya's first three shots this morning and she's posted two more, her card opens on the fourth. Swipe right to go back to the ones you've seen.
- Shots you skipped count as old. New means after the newest shot you've seen. If you flicked past Maya's first four shots and stopped on the fifth, and she then posts two more, her card opens on the sixth with "2 new", not back at her first shot. The skipped ones are still there to swipe back to.
- "2 new" in the header. A day you've partly seen says how many are new: "Today, 5 shots, 2 new". A day that's all new just says "Today, 5 shots". The number is how many were new when the card opened, and it stays while the card is there, even as you look at them.
- A day you've seen to its last shot starts from its first shot again, with a small Seen at the top left of the photo (build 10). Like "n new", it's decided when the card opens and stays while the card is up.
- A card never jumps while you're looking at it. It picks its place before it comes on screen, from what your phone knows by then, and keeps that place, its "n new" and the shot you left it on until you close the app, even if you scroll far away and back. When new shots come in (a refresh), or the next time you open the app, it picks again.
- Your own days (in your week at the top) always start at their first shot, and have no "new".
- Dots under the photo show where you are in a day of more than one shot, the one you're on lit. Up to five show at full size. On a longer day the five slide along as you swipe, and the dots just past them shrink to say there are more; a card that opens partway has the shot it opens on among the five. Before build 18 a day of more than 5 shots had a "4 / 14" chip on the photo instead (plans/25 item 9).
In the viewer
- It opens on the shot you tapped.
- Tapped a new shot: it catches you up (build 13). Each friend with new shots opens at their first new one and plays on from there, then the next friend with new shots. After the last new shot from anyone: "You're all caught up". Go back from a friend's first new shot and you see the ones they posted earlier that day, then the friend before; the segments across the top and "2 / 3" count their whole day (build 16; before, the shots you'd already seen were left out).
- Tapped one you've seen: it plays that day, everyone's, each friend from their first shot, then "That's everyone from Saturday" with the day before. See Likes, comments and the stories viewer.
- Your own day always starts at its first shot.
- Swiping back to a friend returns you to the shot you were on with them.
- Back in the feed, every card you went through in the viewer is on the last shot you stopped on there, so tapping it again carries on from that shot. Cards you didn't reach stay where they were, and "n new" stays as it was when the card opened.
What counts as seen
- A shot counts as seen once it has been on screen for about a second: in the viewer, settled on it, or as the photo showing on a feed card with most of the card on screen. Swiping past a shot doesn't count it, but once you stop on a later one, the ones before it count as old. One you only glanced at on its card still opens the viewer's catch up from that card, and counts as seen for it once the viewer shows it.
- Your own shots always count as seen.
- Only you know what you've seen. Nobody can tell whether you looked at their shot, and there are no read receipts. Private shots are never part of it.
- Your phone remembers first, so it works offline, and tells the server a few seconds later (at most 200 shots a call). Then your other phone, or a new install, opens each day in the same place: since build 11 the feed asks the server what you've seen before its cards show (waiting at most a second), so even the first cards on a new phone open at your new shots.
- What you've seen is kept for 45 days. After that it's forgotten; the feed only goes back a week, so that's long past mattering.
