UPDATES
What's new
What each build of Durpin added and fixed, newest first.
Build 18
Latest
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Pick the film for each photo you add from your photos: Frame it shows the photo on all four films before it goes on the roll.
- Frame it has Tall and Wide, so a wide photo from your photos keeps its sides.
- Every day on Home with more than one shot has dots under the photo. On a long day they slide along as you swipe.
- Turning over a shot in the Darkroom goes on to the rest of that day's, until you close it.
Fixed
- In the viewer, every photo is in the middle of the same room on every page, so the same shape of photo is in the same place from one friend or day to the next, and the words under it keep one place. One line under the likes opens the comments; the previews stay on the feed.
- On Android the camera takes the photo the moment you press. On some phones it took a few seconds.
- Holding a photo or clip in the viewer always lets go when you lift your finger, and holding a clip works anywhere on it.
- Pinching in the viewer no longer leaves the photo lower or stops the swipe to the next person.
- On an iPhone, clips keep their sound the whole way. Before, a clip went quiet after its first moment.
- Switching to Clip right after taking a photo no longer loses the photo.
Build 17
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- In the viewer, nothing sits on a photo but its date stamp: the note, likes and comments are under it, and every shot shows whole. Hold a photo to see it on the whole screen; "more" opens a long note in a sheet.
- Change your username from Edit profile, once every 30 days. Your old one stays yours for 14 days, so you can switch back.
- Deleting an account that signs in with Apple takes Durpin off your Apple ID too: you confirm with Apple once more.
Fixed
- At the largest text sizes, a vibe in the heart button stays its own size instead of spilling out of the circle.
Build 16
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Recaps play your clips: each one's best 2 seconds, cut out first and then moving, with its own sound under the music. Pick the moment yourself from More on your clip, Recap moment. The saved video has them too.
- In the viewer, volume up on a clip turns its sound on, the way other apps do, and the volume goes up as usual.
- The Instant camera is the camera tab's camera: the same lenses, zoom, flash and frame. Instants are 3:4 photos or 9:16 clips, like your shots; ones sent before stay square.
- Download everything puts the date stamp on your photos when the Date stamp setting is on, the same as saving one. Clips go in as they are.
Fixed
- A full phone: shots wait for space instead of using up their tries, and the camera says "Your phone is full" and how many will upload once there's room, instead of the phone's own error.
- Asking someone again within a day of taking a request back says so, and when you can ask again.
- Hearting or reacting to shots very fast says "That's a lot at once" instead of a code.
- An Instant you open leaves no saved link to it on your phone.
- In the viewer, going back from a friend's new shot shows the ones they posted earlier that day, then the friend before.
- A camera that stays black: if it hasn't started after a few seconds, Durpin opens it again by itself, and if it still hasn't, it says "The camera didn't start. Tap to try again." It also tells us, so the cause can be found.
- Durpin carries the camera library's fix for a rare iPhone crash when you leave the camera.
- Offline, Settings shows your own notification choices, as last loaded, instead of every switch on. With nothing loaded yet on that phone, it says they'll show once you're back online.
- Notes on shots are easy to read: on their own dark card in the viewer, and at full strength and reading size under the photo on Home, in light and dark. A long note scrolls when you open it.
- On Home, an earlier day's card dims only its photos; its note, likes and comments stay easy to read.
- A reaction other than a heart no longer says "Liked by".
- An Instant sits below its sender's name and time, at any text size.
- Recaps no longer flash black for a frame between shots.
Build 15
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- On iPhone too, Add from your photos in the Darkroom takes clips, not just photos: up to 8 seconds as they are, or pick which 8 seconds of a longer one.
- Frame it: a photo from your phone that isn't Durpin's 3:4 shape opens under a 3:4 frame when you add it in the Darkroom. Drag and pinch it, then Use this, so a wide photo fills its frame like any shot instead of sitting small in the middle.
- Five tabs, in a bar fixed to the bottom, icons only: Home, Friends, Camera in the middle, Activity and You. Friends has your Instants, requests and adding friends; Activity has what happened to you. The buttons at the top of Home are gone.
- The Friends tab lists your friends instead of showing their faces: the first 8, then See all with a filter. Adding someone (Contacts, Link, QR code) sits near the top, however many friends you have.
- Type someone's phone number into the Friends search to find them, if they've added it to Durpin.
- Save video and Share on a recap make the cutout recap you watched, not the older slideshow, on Android and iPhone, with its music (or none, if you turned it off).
- If you haven't added your phone number, Durpin asks for it when you open the app, so friends who have it in their contacts can find you. Not now waits a week.
- React to a comment with any emoji, not just a heart. The heart on a comment is still one tap; a reaction you picked shows in its place, up to three of the emoji people sent sit beside "Liked by", and Activity shows what they sent.
- Hold a comment for a menu: react, reply, copy the text, delete it (your own, or any on your shot) or report it. After a report you can block them too. Holding no longer deletes straight away.
- Any emoji: "+" at the end of the vibe bar, on shots and on comments, opens every emoji, with the ones you used lately first.
- Clips in the viewer play once and go on to the next shot, with their segment at the top filling as they play. Hold one to stop it. A sound button on each clip turns sound on for all of them, and Durpin remembers it. Photos and clips take the same touches.
- Wide photos and clips show whole on black in the viewer, with the date stamp on their own corner, and on Home's cards without the blurred bands.
- Photos and GIFs in comments. The photos button next to the comment field attaches a photo, a screenshot, a meme or a GIF from your phone, with a caption or on its own. GIFs move while they're on screen, and a tap opens any of them full screen. Friends on build 14 see an empty comment until they update.
- GIFs from your keyboard: tap one in Gboard's or the Samsung keyboard's GIF tab (Android 12 and later), or paste one on an iPhone, and it goes on the comment like one from your photos.
Fixed
- Clips that froze on their first frame while their sound played, most often sharp clips from your photos, play again: only the clip you're watching takes one of the phone's video decoders.
- Tap Requested to take back a friend request you sent.
- Searching a friend's phone number shows them, instead of saying nobody has it.
- A friend request shows on the Friends tab when you come back to it, without pulling to refresh.
- At the largest text sizes, Save stays above the keyboard on Add your number and Your number.
- The QR code for your friend link is read out by screen readers.
- On Android, when your photos sometimes wouldn't open from the Darkroom, it said Try again, and trying again kept failing. Now it says to close Durpin all the way and open it again, which fixes it.
- On a Pixel 9 Pro the lens buttons are .5, 1 and 5, the phone's real lenses. The 2 and 9 were crops of the 1 and the 5, not lenses of their own.
- On iPhone, shots still waiting to upload when you update Durpin go up after the update, and shots on the couldn't upload card keep their picture and save to Photos. A shot Durpin was saving when it closed comes back with its film and roll.
- A day of shots uploading at once no longer uses up their tries when the server asks the phone to slow down, so they don't end up on the couldn't upload card. They wait and go up a moment later.
- Left open on the camera overnight, Durpin starts the new roll at 4 AM instead of saying Out of film until you change tabs, even with no signal.
- A volume button and a tap together on your last frame take one photo, not two with the second stuck on the couldn't upload card.
- On the days the clocks change, the Darkroom starts the new roll at 4 AM by the clock, like the server.
- In light mode, Continue on the invite code, name and permissions steps of joining shows its word. It was dark on dark, so new friends saw a blank button.
- Sign out works with no signal. Before, Durpin signed you back in the next time it opened. If shots haven't uploaded yet, Sign out says so first, and they upload when you sign in again.
- When someone else signs in on the same phone, they don't see your shots, feed, Darkroom or Activity, and your shots still waiting to upload stay on the phone for you.
Build 14
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Post from your photos. In the Darkroom, Add from your photos (or the plus on the next frame) puts photos and clips from your phone on today's roll. Each is one of your 27, gets your film, and lands face down to turn over like any shot. Its date stamp shows the day it was taken. A clip longer than 8 seconds lets you pick which 8.
- Find friends by phone number. Find friends now checks the phone numbers in your contacts, not just their emails. Add your own number in Settings, Privacy, Your number, so friends who have it can find you. Durpin keeps only a scrambled copy of it.
- Every lens. The camera offers every real lens your phone has: the ultra-wide, 1x and each telephoto, like 3x and 10x on a Galaxy S25 Ultra or 5x on an iPhone 16 Pro. Still no digital zoom.
- Send an Instant from a friend's profile: Instant sits next to Friends.
- If a friend records or shares their screen while your Instant is open, you get a note, the same as for a screenshot.
Fixed
- On Android, "Durpin detected this screenshot." no longer shows on every screen; only an open Instant listens.
- Recaps that can't load say so, with Try again, instead of looking empty.
- Recaps and Rewind load faster.
Build 13
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Tapping through the viewer stops. Open a new shot and it plays only what's new, from everyone, then says you're all caught up; open one you've seen and it plays that day, then offers the day before.
- Instants can be clips: switch to Clip in the Instant camera and tap the shutter to record, up to 8 seconds, or tap again to stop sooner. It plays with its sound, round and round, until your friend closes it, and then it's gone like a photo.
- Recaps pop. Each photo's subject is cut out and pops in right where it stands, then the whole photo appears around it, on the beat of Durpin's own track. The sound button turns the music off. With Reduce Motion on, or on an iPhone without iOS 17, the recap plays as before, and Save video and Share still make the recap you know.
- A screenshot of your Instant doesn't go unseen: you get a note, and your Instants list says Screenshot taken. Your friend's screen tells them you'll know. This works on iPhone and on Android 14 and later.
Fixed
- In the viewer, a tap's slide to the next person lands exactly, so the next tap always counts.
- Opening Home with a lot to catch up on no longer runs into load errors: likes and comments load together, a page at a time.
- An invite code that won't work says why as soon as it's in (already used, expired, or not a code), and the invite screen says where codes come from.
- On iPhone, tapping Home goes all the way to the top, even right after a new post came in above.
- Offline, photos you've already seen still show in your week and in the feed.
- The recap note comes at 10 AM on the 1st where you are, not at the same moment for everyone.
Build 12
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- The Darkroom is today's roll as a contact sheet: all 27 frames in the order you took them, showing which you shared, kept, tossed or haven't turned over yet. Tap a face-down frame to turn it over, or a tossed one to bring it back.
- The Friends tab is now Home, since your own week is on it too. The binoculars on the Camera tab blink when you tap them and glow while shots wait in the Darkroom, and a small orange light marks the tab you're on.
- Notes on a shot can be much longer, up to 2200 characters. The viewer shows two lines; tap "more" to read the rest over the photo.
- People you may know: friends of your friends, the ones you have the most friends in common with first, together with the people from your contacts check. They're on People and Find friends; Add asks them, and the x stops suggesting someone.
Fixed
- A note no longer runs into the date stamp on the photo.
Build 11
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Your own posts are in your week at the top of the Friends tab, and the feed under it is only your friends. Before, your shots showed twice.
- No more waiting to develop: a shot is in your Darkroom, face down, as soon as it uploads. Turn it over when you like.
- Shared rolls are a live album: everyone on the roll sees each shot as it comes in, and gets a note when the roll is done.
- Instants open as soon as they're sent.
Fixed
- Shots waiting for signal upload within about 15 seconds of it coming back, not up to a minute later.
- In light mode, a wide photo on Friends sits in its own soft colors, not between heavy dark bars.
- Your week at the top of the Friends tab is there as soon as the tab opens, offline too, and the feed under it no longer jumps down.
- Scroll your profile or a friend's and the clock stays clear: a bar slides in behind it, so names never run under it.
- A photo that couldn't load on a weak signal tries again when you come back to Durpin or pull to refresh.
- On a new phone, or a second one, the first cards on Friends open at the shots you haven't seen, with "2 new", like on your first phone.
- On iPhone, Friends scrolls again from the top of the feed. Since build 9 it could stop moving once you came back up to the top.
Build 10
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Keep tapping in the viewer: past someone's last shot, a tap goes on to the next person, so tapping alone takes you through everyone. Swipes still jump between people.
- Activity: the bell on the Friends tab lists likes, comments, replies, friend requests and joins, newest first, with filters and Accept right in the row.
- Rotate a photo after it develops, on the reveal or from More, when the camera stood it the wrong way round.
- Your week at the top of the Friends tab, with a + to take the next shot.
- A small "Seen" on a friend's card you've seen to its last shot.
- Friends as faces in People, the people from your contacts you haven't added yet, and your friend link as a QR code.
- The big screen titles are in a serif.
Fixed
- A friend's card opens at the first shot they posted since you last looked, even if you skipped some of their earlier ones. Pick up where you left off is now called New shots first.
- On iPhone, the volume buttons take a photo on the Camera tab. They never did before, though earlier notes said they did.
- The comments no longer show "No comments yet" for a moment before a shot's comments load.
Build 9
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Notifications are on by default. If Durpin has never asked, it asks once when you open it.
- Pick up where you left off: when a friend adds to their day, their card and the viewer open at the first shot you haven't seen.
Fixed
- The Friends feed opens at the top with the newest card first, instead of sometimes one card down.
- A friend's card shows all of their shots for the day, not just the first 12.
Build 8
Out on Android. The iPhone build follows through TestFlight.
New
- Swipe left and right through everyone's shots in the Friends viewer, one person after another.
- Your own shared days show in the Friends feed, under your name.
- The viewer on a profile goes through all its shots, not just one day.
- Hearts on comments, and replies to a comment.
- On Android, the volume buttons take a photo, and start and stop a clip.
- The flash works in Clip mode.
- Switch film any time during the day; you still have 27 shots a day.
- Tap the tab you're on to go back to the top.
- Push notifications on your phone.
Fixed
- iPhone: you stay signed in when the app wakes in the background while the phone is locked.
- "View all comments" counts only the comments you can see.
Build 7
Out on Android. The iPhone build is waiting for Apple's review.
New
- Like a shot with the heart, or double tap the photo. Hold the heart for the other vibes.
- "Liked by" under each shot shows which friends liked it, never a count.
- The newest comments show under each shot, and the comments sheet closes with a drag down or a tap above it.
- The viewer works like stories: left and right through a friend's day, up and down between friends.
- Find friends from your contacts, share your friend link, or search someone's exact @username.
- Your profile is laid out by week, with a tile for each day you shot.
- Light and dark: pick System, Light or Dark in Settings.
- A new logo.
Fixed
- A shot that can't upload waits on your phone, and Durpin never throws it away. If it can never upload, the Darkroom keeps it for you to save or delete.
- No signal no longer uses up a shot's tries to upload.
Build 6
Fixed
- Comments: sending one puts the keyboard away, and the sheet has a close button.
- Switching from the ultra-wide lens to the front camera no longer causes an error.
Build 5
New
- On Android, Durpin tells you when a new build is out.
- Earlier days in the Friends feed have a heading, like "Yesterday" or "Sunday, Oct 11".
- Settings shows the build number.
Fixed
- Films have no grain. It looked like noise on full size photos.
- The Darkroom says "on Sunday film", so the film's name doesn't read as the day.
Build 4
New
- A new logo: binoculars that narrow into a thumbtack.
- Clips fill the whole tall frame, and Clip mode is full screen.
- Swipe sideways anywhere on the camera to switch between Photo and Clip.
Fixed
- A clip in the viewer fits between the top of the screen and the buttons, so its date stamp stays clear.
- The invite code screen has "Use a different account", so nobody gets stuck there.
Build 3
New
- Four new films: Sunday, Linen, Afterparty and Silver.
- A new camera, with the ultra-wide lens on phones that have one.
- A timer at the top of the frame while a clip records.
- A new shutter sound.
- Photos and clips are saved at full quality.
Fixed
- Clips ask for the microphone, and record without sound if you say no.
Build 2
New
- Shots develop in 5 to 20 minutes.
- The film look is stronger.
- Report a problem, in Settings.
- iPhone: Sign in with Apple uses the iPhone's own sign in.
Fixed
- Shots taken with the phone on its side stand upright and show whole, not cropped.
Build 1
The first test build.
New
- The camera: 27 shots a day, photos and short clips, with a film look and a date stamp.
- Shots develop in the Darkroom. Turn them over to share them with friends, keep them private, or toss them.
- The Friends feed, with vibes and comments.
- Your journal on the You tab, with Selects and Private.
- Monthly recaps you can save or share as a video, and Rewind: your shots from this date in earlier years.
- Instants: a shot for one friend that opens once.
- Shared rolls: shoot on one roll together.
- Invite links open the app.
- A home screen widget, and a camera button in Quick Settings (Android) and Control Center (iPhone).
- Save shots to Photos, or download everything at once.
- Block, mute and report.
